Best Christmas Wines 2026: Cases, Gifts and Wines for Boxing Day

A Christmas Day case, wine gifts from £17, easy-drinking bottles for the days around the big one, plus Port and a couple of natural wines.

Christmas wine is really three jobs: the bottles for the day itself, a present or two, and enough in the house for everything else. Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, whoever turns up at the door. This guide covers all three. If you want wines matched to the starter and the roast, our Christmas Bangers guide sorts them by what's on the table.

Short on time? Our Christmas Favourites collection has a lot of these in one place.

Our Most Popular Christmas Wine Gifts

If you're buying for someone whose taste you can't pin down, these three are a safe start. They were all in last year's Christmas range, and you'll find the full set, with delivery dates, in our Christmas gift guide.

  • Bestselling Red Wine Gift – £17
One bottle of Cantine Pirovano Beatrice Appassimento Rosso from Salento in southern Italy. It's velvety and full-bodied, with a touch of sweetness from partly drying the grapes before fermentation. Vegan, and it comes in a gift box with a tag. Kate calls it "a hug in a glass".
  • Blind Tasting at Home: Red Wines – £55
Three 75cl reds wrapped to hide the labels, with numbered neck tags and QR-code cards that link to the descriptions. You pour, guess, then reveal. It works for a date night, a houseful of friends or one person training their palate. The Independent called it "an ingenious way to conduct wine tasting at home" (Samuel Mathewson, August 2024).
  • Natural Wine Duo: Red and Orange Wine Gift – £34
A juicy Tempranillo with bright red fruit and an orange wine with a bit of brightness and complexity. A good pair for anyone who wants to try natural wine.

More ideas, from Champagne to glassware, are in our Christmas wine gifts collection.

Wines for Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and whoever drops in

We've been champions of wines from the Southern French Languedoc region. And we think there's a Languedoc bottle for every christmas occasion. These are the bottles for the days around the big one. Twelve of the fifteen cost under £16. They come from our featured Languedoc producer Domaine Gayda, which sits at Brugairolles near Carcassonne in buildings that started life as a coaching inn in 1749, and from its neighbours across the Languedoc-Roussillon in southern France.

Languedoc whites

  • Domaine Gayda, T'air d'Oc Sauvignon Blanc 2025 – £11
Southern French Sauvignon with New Zealand intensity: zesty lemon, apricot and a little tropical fruit. Prawns, or a goat's cheese and beetroot salad.
  • Domaine Gayda, Flying Solo White 2025 – £11
Grenache Blanc and Viognier from limestone terraces in the Minervois. Pear, almond blossom and white peach, softly textured. Lemon sole, prawns, or a mildly spiced Thai green curry.
  • Domaine Gayda, Sphere Viognier 2025 – £13
Aromatic and fresh, with white flowers, citrus peel, William pear and yuzu, and a twist of bitter almond at the end. A creamy vegetable risotto or grilled sea bass.
  • Domaine Gayda, En Passant White 2024 – £14
A Vermentino inspired by Iggy Pop's The Passenger, with apricot and Granny Smith apple. Grilled sea bass with lemon and fennel, or Vietnamese rice paper rolls with tofu or prawns.
  • Baby del Rey, Côtes Catalanes White 2025 – £15
Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris from Roussillon, with peach, lemon and a finish of crushed stones. Kate calls it "a banger of a wine".
  • Domaine Monplézy, Félicité Blanc 2024 – £21
Marsanne (60%) and Roussanne (40%) from Pézenas. Linden flower and fennel on the nose, with a saline finish, and some body from lees ageing. Monkfish or grilled sea bass.

Languedoc rosés

  • Domaine Gayda, Flying Solo Rosé 2025 – £11
Grenache and Cinsault, dry and light, with wild strawberry, raspberry and cherry. Kate reaches for it when she wants something fresh and easy. Goat's cheese and beetroot salad, charcuterie or grilled salmon.
  • Domaine Gayda, La Minuette Rosé 2025 – £14
Pale and dry, in a soft Provençal style, with wild strawberry and clementine. Kate says it feels effortless. Seared tuna with sesame and lime, or young goat's cheese.

Languedoc reds

  • Domaine Gayda, Flying Solo Red 2025 – £11.50
Grenache and Syrah from limestone plateaus in the Minervois. Red plum and blackberry with a hint of liquorice. Chargrilled lamb, aubergine parmigiana or a pizza with 'nduja.
  • Domaine Gayda, Sphere Syrah 2024 – £13
Blackberry, blackcurrant, violets and a little pink peppercorn, with velvety tannins. Roast lamb with Mediterranean herbs, or roasted aubergine moussaka.
  • Domaine Gayda, En Passant Rouge 2024 – £14.50
Bold but smooth, with dark fruit and a hint of spice. Kate says it's a good one for entertaining. Grilled lamb with rosemary and garlic, or chargrilled vegetables with smoked paprika.
  • Sarrat de Goundy, Les Saisonniers Rouge 2025 – £14.50
Grenache and Syrah from the Aude, in a lighter bottle under screwcap. Strawberry, dark cherry and black pepper, with no hard edges. It's the one for "just give me something good". Pizza, tacos or a chicken burger on Boxing Day.
  • Baby del Rey, Côtes Catalanes Rouge 2024/25 – £15.50
Mostly Grenache, with a little Syrah, from northern Roussillon. Juicy ripe berries and soft spice. Charcuterie, or roast chicken with Provençal herbs.
  • Domaine Monplézy, Félicité Rouge 2022 – £21.50
Grenache, Syrah and Carignan from Pézenas. Liquorice, black pepper, coffee and cocoa, dense and velvety. Kate says it's brilliant value. Lamb, or a seafood paella.
  • Domaine Gayda, Le Chemin de Moscou 2022 – £28.50
A full-bodied Syrah. Kate calls it plush and powerful without being showy, and says it "feels like a proper moment when you open it". A good one to give.

Puglian reds from Cantine Sampietrana

As regular customers will already know, Christmas wouldn't be complete without something from the South of Ita;y. Cantine Sampietrana are the team behind our two most popular big, warm reds from the heel of Italy, both made for roast meat. The Brindisi Riserva is in the Christmas Day Case too. See more in our Italian wine collection.

  • Cantine Sampietrana, Brindisi Riserva 2022 – £17
Negroamaro aged for twelve months in Allier oak barriques. Blackberry, liquorice and clove, with a little dark chocolate, and a velvety feel. Kate calls it a banger and says everyone who tries it loves it. Try it with a spicy pasta.
  • Cantine Sampietrana, Settebraccia 2021 – £24
A Negroamaro and Susumaniello blend from old bush vines, named after the seven-pronged farm tool of Salento. Black cherry, plum and vanilla, with soft tannins. Slow-roasted lamb shoulder, or a vegan aubergine parmigiana.

Port for the cheeseboard

Niepoort is our favourite Port producer (there's more in Pioneers of Port). For the board itself, see our Christmas cheese and wine guide, or browse the full Port and Sherry collection.

  • Niepoort, LBV Port 2020 – £26
Dark chocolate and a subtle floral note around deep forest fruit. Balanced and fresh, with a spirit-driven finish. Niepoort suggests dark chocolate desserts, or Cheddar, Gouda and Brie.
  • Niepoort, Tawny Dee Port – £22.50
A tawny with an average age of three and a half years, so there's still plenty of luscious fruit alongside nutty aromas and dried raisin. Niepoort says it's a spot-on match for milk chocolate. There's a half bottle at £11 if you'd like less.
  • Niepoort, Dry Rabbit White Port – £21.50
Nuts and almonds, with a fresh, spirity finish after years in small old oak barrels. Serve it chilled as an aperitif, or as a long drink with tonic, ice and a twist of lemon. A half bottle is £11.

Natural and orange wines for the curious

More of you are asking for these each year, so there are two on the list. Both are vegan. See the rest in our natural wines and orange wines collections.

  • Solara Orange Wine 2024 – £14
A Romanian orange wine from Viile Timisului, made at the Cramele Recas estate. Quince, poire william and ripe stone fruit, with gentle tannins. Kate calls it by far our most popular and most accessible orange wine, and The Guardian's David Williams (March 2024) called it "a great starter example for the style". Manchego or mature Cheddar, roasted squash, or a Moroccan-style tagine.
  • Gonzalo Grijalba, Gran Cerdo Tempranillo 2025 – £13.50
A natural Tempranillo from 35-year-old organic vines, fermented with natural yeasts and aged without oak. Bright cherry and red berry, with a touch of spice and a slightly earthy edge. Kate says it's brilliant value, "not too funky, just loads of great fruit". Mushroom and lentil shepherd's pie, Manchego or paprika roast chicken.
