Cantarina is a third-generation family winery near Villafranca del Bierzo, quietly buying back century-old vineyard parcels that had been sold off to bigger producers and vinifying each one separately with wild yeasts and minimal intervention. Their two La Cabeza de Perro wines - a floral, stone-fruit white from 1903-planted Palomino vines and a bright, crunchy Mencía red - are completely new to Reserve Wines this summer, and both are exactly the kind of thing Bierzo does best: pure, fresh and unmistakably of their place.
Libre y Salvaje farms organically in Aragón's D.O.P. Cariñena, working centuries-old Garnacha and Cariñena vines from a four-level, gravity-fed winery that needs almost no pumps or machinery. Winemaker Ignacio Marin keeps intervention to a minimum and lets the fruit do the talking - from the easy-drinking Camino del Bosque to a generous Selección Garnacha and a rare, skin-contact Narancha orange wine with just twelve bottles in our allocation. Low-tech, high character, and back in the range this summer.
