Solara Orange wine 2024, 12.5% ABV, Romania, Vegan

A perfect introduction to Orange wine. The nose is a delicate combination of orange peel, and a hint of vanilla. On the palate it has a bit of complexity, with elegant fruit flavours of dried apricot, orange and honey backed up with a gentle tannin structure and long finish. Made with minimal intervention, the wine is well balanced, pure and incredibly fresh.

MA Arndorfer, Schlehe Amber, 11.5% ABV, Austria, Vegan, Organic

This wine glows with an inviting rich, deep amber colour. On the nose, there’s a burst of ripe golden plums and juicy apricots, with just a hint of something floral in the background. Take a sip, and it’s all about the soft, velvety texture. The finish brings a gentle touch of spice, thanks to time spent on the lees, adding a lovely layer of warmth and complexity. It’s beautifully balanced, with flavours that linger just enough to make you reach for another glass.

Try it with roast duck with an apricot glaze or creamy blue cheeses like stilton.

Maremosso Bianco Catarratto IGP, 13.5%, Italy, Vegan, Organic

This Catarratto produced by the Vesco family on Siciliy is perfect for anyone who is looking to start their journey into orange wines. Fantastic, rich, pithy wine full of green apple and quince fruit flowing into ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon with a savoury, herbaceous finish full of dried oregano and lightly toasted almonds.

Rook en Spieels, Waas Semillon,  ABV, South Africa, Vegan

This is the kind of Orange wine that would also appeal to white wine drinkers. There's texture from the subtle tannins yes, but it is delightfully drinkable. The nose is fresh with aromas of ripe peach and apricot. The palate builds on this with a creamy texture before the bright acidity freshens up with a pithy finish. Bright modern wine that's perfect for now.

Rallo, Vicoletto Catarratto Orange Wine, 13% ABV, Italy, Vegan

Vicoletto is a new project from Rallo Azienda Agricola. Catarratto grapes are grown in sandy soils high up in the hills of Alcamo. This wine is a slice of Sicilian sunshine. It has a beautiful mix of citrus, grapefruit, apple and melon fruit on the nose. These follow onto the palate, complemented by a subtle note of Mediterranean herbs and a backbone of fresh acidity. 10% of the wine is fermented on skins for 12 days. Bottled without fining or filtration.

Vigneti Tardis, Fratelli Felix Bianco, 13% ABV, Italy, Vegan, Organic

If you love orange wine that's on the fresh and fruity side of the style, then this is for you. There's delicious aromas of tropical fruit (think lychee, peach and citrus hints) and a honeysuckle note. On the palate it is light and dry with a slightly chalky texture and bit of salt on the finish. Very easy drinking stuff with a bit of something about it.

How to enjoy orange wine

  • Serve slightly chilled – around 12–14°C is spot on

  • Give it a swirl – especially if unfiltered, to stir up all that flavour

  • Pair it up – these wines go brilliantly with:

    • Spiced veggie dishes, North African stews

    • Miso-glazed aubergine, grilled halloumi

    • Rich poultry or oily fish like mackerel and salmon
