Many wines use animal-derived fining agents — such as gelatine, casein (milk protein) or egg whites — to clarify and stabilise the wine before bottling. These agents are filtered out during production, but their use means the wine isn’t suitable for vegans. Vegan-friendly wines either use plant-based or mineral alternatives such as bentonite clay or vegetable proteins, or are bottled unfined and unfiltered entirely — which can result in a slight natural haze or sediment, but no compromise on quality.
