Top 5 whites to try

Reserve Wines | Encosta da Vinha Branco 2021

Encosta da Vinha Branco

We love Portuguese wine and this is a brilliant example showing off bright flavours and great value. The aroma is citrussy white with lemon and grapefruit, a little herbaceous edge and some fresh minerality. These are followed on the palate with some crisp green apple and a hint of tropical fruit. An easy drinking and refreshing wine.

Ecker, Gruner Veltliner von Eckhof 2021

Austrian Grüner Veltliner is perfect for fans of crisp dry whites. The loess soil, the altitude and the terroir produce light, fruity and very quaffable wines with zingy citrus fruits and crisp acidity. This is a superb wine from Bernhard Ecker who is just the latest member of the Ecker family to make wines in Wagram. His family have been making wines here for 400 years.

Matawhero Gisbourne Sauvignon Blanc

Matawhero, Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2021

This is a fab New Zealand wine with honeysuckle aromas mingling with aromatic notes of tropical fruit and herbal hints. The fruit is from Gisborne which does give it a character distinct from classic Marlborough examples. On the palate, it has passionfruit and summer melon fruit with a touch of dried herbs. Finishes rich and full. Delicious.

Roveglia, Lugana Limne 2021

If you haven't ever tried a Lugana white before, this is the prefect opportunity to get acquainted. This is a gorgeous wine that is easy to fall for from the first sip. It is full, round and fruity with peach blossom, field flower and ripe white-stone fruit on the nose. The creamy, savoury palate offers ripe peach, yellow pear and lemon drops alongside a balanced acidity that gives it a mouth-watering finish.

Christian Bellang, Bourgogne Chardonnay Sous La Velle 2020

A very classy white Burgundy at a great price. The Sous la Velle Chardonnay is made from grapes mainly from Meursault, aged in oak barrels for around 1 year and offers excellent value for money for the quality of fruit. This is a rich and complex Burgundy full of ripe fruit, toasty oak and crisp acidity.

Top 5 reds to try

Caves de Julienas-Chaintre, Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau 2022 "Coeur Pourpre"

Caves de Julienas-Chaintre, Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau 2022 "Coeur Pourpre"

This year's fresh new Gamay juice from one of our favourite producers of Beaujolais-Villages. This is fun and drinkable stuff with lots of strawberry and redcurrant fruit and juicy acidity.

Calappiano, Chianti Riserva 2018

Chianti Riserva is always a treat and this one from Calappiano is a long time staff favourite - so its worth snapping some up at this price. This is a really enjoyable Chianti Riserva with soft red cherries and plums on the nose and a savoury spiciness from a year spent in barrels. The palate is well structured with more of that fruit and spice and a bright lick of acidity and fine tannins on the finish.

Mas Blanch I Jove, Sao Abrivat 2018

A Spanish gem. This is a lovely blend of 40% Tempranillo, 35% Garnacha, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and makes for a great alternative to Rioja. It's packed full of juicy cherry and ripe red berry fruit. Expect a touch of vanilla, sweet cinnamon spice and a kick of black pepper to finish.

Sottano, Seleccion del Enologo, Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Sottano are one of our favourite Argentinian producers and their Cabernet Sauvignons are superb. This uses their ripest fruit to create a real showstopper. Notes of massively concentrated and pure fruits and mint next to cassis, cappuccino and chocolate add a great complexity to this Cabernet. It has a voluptuous, mouth-filling richness on the palate. The ripe, round tannins enable good balance and a long finish.

Hans Herzog, "Secrets of Marlborough" Montepulciano 2016

Now for a serious treat from a sensational producer. Hans Herzog is an artisan family winery acclaimed for their handcrafted wines made from their exceptional 'Grand Cru' organic vineyard in Marlborough. A vibrant, aromatic wine full of blackberries and blackcurrants with a rich dark chocolate finish and silky tannins. We absolutely love these wines.

Our sale is on until 18th January 2023 so don't miss this chance to fill the wine rack with great wine, while stocks last.
