Organic, Biodynamic, Vegan-Friendly Wine - And Absolutely Delicious

A Family Legacy Rooted in Sustainability
If you’re looking for wines that taste good and do good, Charles Frey Wines should be at the top of your list. Based in the picturesque village of Dambach-la-Ville in Alsace, this family-run estate has been nurturing vines since the early 18th century.
But it was in 1963 that Charles Frey and his wife Renée turned a corner, dedicating their land exclusively to winegrowing. Since then, the Frey family has gone from strength to strength, with the current generation continuing their pioneering work in organic and biodynamic farming.
The estate has been passed down through three generations, each bringing fresh ideas while staying true to the traditions of organic farming. From Julien’s innovative approach to the creation of a pioneering eco-friendly winery, to their partnership with neighbouring Domaine Mersiol, the story is one of shared passion and respect for the land. Now, with Thiébaud joining his brother, the legacy of sustainable winemaking is set to continue for generations to come.

Organic and Biodynamic by Nature
In 1997, Charles’s son Dominique took a bold step and converted the entire estate to biodynamic viticulture -making Charles Frey one of the first producers in Alsace to embrace this holistic, chemical-free approach.
Certified both organic and biodynamic, their 14 hectares of vineyards are alive with biodiversity, natural composts, and herbal infusions that nourish the soil and vines.
Each bottle tells a story of the land it comes from. With five distinct soil types across the estate - including granite, clay, sand, silt, and mica - the wines are beautifully expressive and true to their terroir.

Minimal Intervention, Maximum Character
At Charles Frey, winemaking is rooted in biodynamics and a respect for nature’s rhythms. Their unique bioclimatic winery is above ground, and made entirely of solid wood, without air conditioning and only with natural materials. It is centred around a granite menhir and seven symbolic copper wires, which reflect the family’s philosophy of harmony between land, people and wine. In the cellar, the team keeps things simple and natural – favouring spontaneous fermentation, minimal intervention and no unnecessary additives.
Always expressive of their granite terroirs, these are wines crafted with both purity and personality.

Our Top Three Charles Frey Wines
We’re proud to stock a curated selection of Charles Frey’s finest. Here are our current favourites:
1. Charles Frey Frankenstein 2022
This wine is a field blend of four different grape varieties grown on the granite-rich soils of the Frankstein Grand Cru vineyard and aged in earthenware vessels. As blends aren’t allowed to carry the Grand Cru designation in Alsace, it was named Frankenstein. In the glass it is bold and characterful, delivering exotic mango, ripe pear, and juicy peach, lifted by floral hints and a warming spice of ginger, nutmeg, and vanilla. On the finish it is dry, mineral-driven and has a vibrant freshness that lingers beautifully.
Try this with buttery roast chicken, spiced prawns, roasted squash and tahini salad or with Comté or aged Gouda.

2. Charles Frey Maceration 2023
A bold and expressive orange wine from Alsace, this macerated blend of Gewurztraminer and Riesling delivers a heady mix of exotic fruits and floral spice. Aromas of lychee and wildflowers lead into a palate of spiced tangerine, dried apricot, and papaya, balanced by zesty acidity and delicate tannins. The unfiltered, biodynamic approach adds texture and depth, making this a vibrant yet structured wine with a lingering, dry finish.
Try this with a hearty spiced vegetable stew or a full-bodied cheese platter.

3. Charles Frey Pinot Noir Harmonie 2023
Charles Frey’s Pinot Noir Harmonie 2023 is a delicate and expressive take on Alsace Pinot Noir. It’s light-bodied, with a bright, pale ruby colour and aromas of fresh strawberries, cherries, and a touch of dried rose petals. The palate is soft yet vibrant, showcasing juicy red berries, a hint of spice, and a gentle, refreshing acidity. Silky tannins make it incredibly drinkable, finishing with a subtle floral lift. If you’re into Burgundy but want something a little more playful, this is a great choice.
