Get to know: False Bay 'Whole Bunch' Cinsault Mourvedre Rose

Tasting Note

Old bush vine Cinsault forms the backbone of this 'proper' rose. Think pale pink in the glass, but packed with character. This South African rosé is dry as a bone, with delicate notes of wild strawberry, red cherry and rosehip, plus a subtle savoury edge that gives it real grown-up appeal. There’s a crisp, refreshing acidity that makes it proper thirst-quenching, while a whisper of texture from the whole bunch pressing adds a bit of body and bite.

Food pairing ideas:

  • Smashing with a big plate of roast Mediterranean veg and hummus

  • Pairs perfectly with grilled halloumi flatbreads or spiced chicken skewers

  • Cheese-wise, try with a crumbly goat’s cheese or a creamy Brie-style vegan alternative

Kate Says

"Love the wines of False Bay. They are such good quality for the price. This rosé is made from delicately pressed whole bunches of grapes. The pale juice is full of summer berries but also has a food friendly savouriness."

Producer Info

False Bay Vineyards is the laid-back, sustainably-focused sibling of Waterkloof Estate, based near the cool coastal slopes of South Africa’s Western Cape. The ‘Whole Bunch’ Rosé 2024 is crafted with minimal intervention by cellarmaster Nadia Langenegger, who lets the vineyards and wild yeasts do the talking.

The name ‘Whole Bunch’ refers to the traditional winemaking technique used here – fermenting whole bunches of Cinsault and Mourvèdre grapes, stems and all. This gives the wine a delicate colour, gentle tannin grip, and a touch of savoury spice. Grapes are picked early to preserve acidity, fermented naturally with wild yeasts, and aged for a few months before bottling fresh and unfiltered. The result? A dry rosé with far more complexity than you’d expect for the price.
