There’s a lot going on in this glass – and all of it good. The False Bay Slow Chenin Blanc 2024 kicks off with bright citrus and green plum, before unfolding into layers of creamy lemon, fennel, and a gently bready note thanks to the wild yeast fermentation. It’s got a lovely soft texture, a bit of weight, and a fresh, zippy finish that keeps you coming back for another sip. An affordable complex Chenin Blanc, sustainably made, and packed with personality.
Food pairing ideas:
Try it with a Vietnamese-style tofu noodle salad – the citrus and herbal edge works brilliantly.
Lobster risotto or herby roast chicken will also make this shine.
Cheese-wise, it pairs beautifully with Brie or a good creamy goat’s cheese.
"We love the wines made by Nadia Langenegger. Her False Bay Chenin shows you can get refreshing wine with a subtle savoury complexity at an affordable price. Brilliant with herby roast chicken."
False Bay Vineyards was set up by Paul Boutinot in 1994 with a mission: to save great South African grapes from being lost in bland bulk wine. Now led by winemaker Nadia Langenegger, the team works sustainably with old bush vines from places like Swartland and Stellenbosch, known for producing grapes with real depth and flavour.
This 2024 vintage is all about keeping things natural and letting the grape shine. Grapes are hand-picked early in the morning to lock in freshness, with only the free-run juice used – that’s the best stuff, no pressing involved. Then it’s a wild yeast fermentation (no lab yeast here), which takes its time – up to eight weeks – followed by ten months on the lees (the dead yeast cells left after fermentation) to build creaminess and texture.
A splash of the wine even spends time in 600-litre French barrels, but the oak’s just there to support – not dominate. The result? A South African Chenin Blanc with brilliant complexity, gentle richness, and a crisp, refreshing finish.
