Kate Goodman opened Reserve Wines on Burton Road in leafy West Didsbury, Manchester in 2003. Over the years we've seen many changes and challenges, but always kept in mind the promise we made that everything we sell tastes great, has a personality and is a stunner for its price. We continue to champion interesting, quality-driven wines from all corners of the globe and for all budgets, made by people who really care about each and every bottle. As we approach our 20th anniversary, we decided it was time for a refurbishment of our original shop. So to celebrate it's reopening, we've put together a mixed case of favourites as chosen by our Didsbury team. These are wines that we've recommended over and over again, that deliver on the promises we made.
"We've loved serving the local Didsbury community for the past 20 years. This case is a curated selection of the wines that we've enjoyed along the way and that we continue to recommend today. These are versatile and satisfying wines that we know you'll love."
Casa de Vilacetinho, Grande Escolha Vinho Verde, Portugal 12.5%
We love Portuguese wine, and have been championing it for years. This is a really fabulous Vinho Verde that will instantly remind you of summer holidays. The Vinho Verde region is in Northern Portugal where it’s cooler so you get bright acidity and lower alcohol. It’s got a little spritz and has really refreshing citrussy notes but also tropical characters.
Ecker-Eckhof, Gruner Veltliner von Eckhof, Austria 12%
Perfect for fans of crisp dry whites. Albarino is Spain's star white grape. A nose of peach, pear, apple, melon and tropical fruit leads to a dry fresh palate, with great intensity and length on the finish. Flavours of peach, grapefruit, pear, green apple, lemon are vibrant and focused.
Tabali, Pedregoso Gran Reserva Viognier, Chile 13.5%
Viognier can be an exciting and exotic grape and a good alternative for fans of tropical unoaked Chardonnay. If you've never tried it, this lovely Chilean example is a great place to start. It has an alluringly exotic aroma of citrus, orange peel, dried apricot, fresh pears and peaches, plus hints of candied fruit. Bright, expressive and pure.
Vigneti del Salento, 'I Muri' Negroamaro, Italy 13.0%
If you ask us for a red recommendation, it won't take long for us to guide you to Southern Italy. There's an abundance of great value, full flavoured wine to be found here. Negroamaro is one of the grapes that thrives in the warm Puglian sun. This is intense with notes of blackberries and blackcurrants. Medium bodied and velvety, with good balance and savoury notes on the finish. This is the kind of moreish wine that keeps drawing you back in.
Herdade de Sao Miguel, Ciconia Tinto, Portugal 13.5%
Another Portuguese winner, this has been a staple in the range because it always satisfies. A blend of Touriga Nacional, Syrah, Aragonez and a number of other indigenous varieties. It's full of rich, black forest fruits and toasted oak with a silky smooth finish. If you normally go for a Malbec, you'll love this.
Astral de Chateau Puybarbe, France 14.5%
Chateau Puybarbe is located in the heart of the appellation of Côtes de Bourg just opposite the more famous Margaux in Bordeaux. It's run by Anna and Riku Väänänen who took over in 2018. We loved their wines from the first time we tried them and this is a great example of modern Bordeaux wine. Deliciously full-bodied with abundant fruit and soft acidity. An ideal wine for a sunday roast.
