Chateau Biac 2016

Get to know: Chateau Biac 2016

Tasting Note

Described by the winery as a great symphony, it is a blend of grapes from individual plots within the vineyard assembled in perfect harmony. This produces a modern wine from one of the best vintages in recent years. Excellent show of ripe dark fruits vanilla, chocolate, tobacco and earth. Neat and precise. Still young at this stage so will need more time in a loving cellar. However, the ripe tannins give this wine perfect balance: power and finesse. The length of this wine is astonishing, it goes on and on…

Try this with a braised leg of lamb.

Kate Says

"This Chateau was highly recommended to us by a trusted source and we've since absolutely fallen for the lovely Lebanese family who owns it. Their wines are modern takes on that classic savoury style of Bordeaux and this will really shine in 3-4 years time. One to add to the cellar if you can."

Producer Info

Château Biac has a unique setting overlooking a meander of the Garonne River and the plain of the Graves, and was built in 1755 by the daughter of the Baron of Langoiran using stones from the nearby quarry surrounded by woods.

Tony, Youmna, Yasmina, Gabriel and Antonia are the Lebanese family who took over the estate in 2006 and have made a determined commitment to perpetuate the Biac legacy of excellence. They hope to ensure that Château Biac remains one of the finest properties of the region at the center of Bordeaux’s history of fine wines.

From 2006 to 2014, important changes were made to the vineyard after deep analysis of its soil by agricultural consultant Gilles Rey, revealed its extraodinary diversity on a mere 9.7 hectares. Biac can now be likened to “Burgundy in Bordeaux”: a cluster of small domains each with its own, well defined soil type and matching grape variety, root stock or clone.

Patrick Leon oversees the making of their red wines. Each vintage dictates how how our “terroir” has fared that year and the blend is altered accordingly.

This blend is made up of 42% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot and 13% Cabernet Franc.

Fruit is handpicked and fermented in whole bunches before being pressed. 40% of the wine is matured in French oak barrels for 16 months.
