Get to know more about English wine with our quick guide below:
English wine continues to go from strength to strength. Producers across the country are earning international recognition for quality, while investment in vineyards and wineries is helping drive one of the fastest-growing wine industries in the world. Today, there are over 1,100 vineyards and almost 240 wineries across the UK, with vineyard plantings having increased by more than 500% since 2005.
The South East remains the heartland of English wine, with Kent, Sussex and Hampshire home to many of the country's leading estates. These regions benefit from a cool climate and chalk-rich soils that are particularly well suited to producing exceptional sparkling wines, while still wines made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Bacchus are gaining an increasingly loyal following.
English wine production reached more than 10.6 million bottles in 2024, making it the fourth-largest harvest on record, while sales continue to grow as more wine lovers discover the quality being produced on our doorstep. Fresh, elegant and unmistakably distinctive, English wine is one of the most exciting categories in the wine world today.
Black Chalk (Hampshire)
A converted cow shed in rural Hampshire might seem an unlikely place to produce some of England's most exciting sparkling wines. Yet that's exactly what Black Chalk has been doing since 2015, quietly building a reputation among wine lovers, critics and sommeliers alike.
A rising star in East Anglia, Flint Vineyards is known for its innovative, small-batch still wines. Their cool-climate Bacchus and Pinot Noir Précoce showcase the freshness and aromatic intensity that make English still wines so exciting. Look out for textured whites and delicate reds with a modern edge.
One of the UK’s most acclaimed producers, Gusbourne crafts world-class sparkling wines from Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay grown in the clay and chalk soils of Appledore, Kent. Their vintage Brut Reserve and Blanc de Blancs are benchmarks for English sparkling wine - refined, expressive and beautifully balanced.
Hattingley Valley (Hampshire)
Hattingley Valley is one of England’s most respected sparkling wine producers, based in rural Hampshire. Founded in 2008 as a family farm diversification project, the estate has grown into a leading name in English sparkling wine, known for combining serious winemaking credentials with a playful, unconventional spirit. They have one of the UK’s most advanced, eco-friendly wineries and a philosophy that embraces both tradition and innovation.
Located on the Thames Valley slopes, Harrow & Hope produces sparkling wines with depth and character. Their Brut is rich, toasty and complex, made in the traditional method from Champagne grapes. A fantastic example of how English terroir can deliver serious quality and finesse.
English wines are now competing with the best in the world. From award-winning sparkling wines to aromatic, elegant still bottles, there’s never been a better time to explore what homegrown wine can offer. Whether you’re new to the category or already a fan, our collection offers a brilliant introduction to the very best.
