Vachnadziani, Saperavi 2023

Get to know: Vachnadziani Winery, Kakheti, Saperavi 2023

A richly coloured and warmly spiced red from the historic Georgian winemaking heartland of Kakheti.

Tasting Note

Deep, inky ruby in the glass, with inviting notes of wild berries, ripe red plum, fragrant lavender, and a touch of tea. The palate is generous yet balanced, offering juicy berry fruit, soft tannins, and the hallmark fresh acidity of Saperavi. A warming spice lifts the finish, making this a deeply satisfying sip from start to end. Perfect for those seeking a distinctive wine with both history and character.

Top food pairings:

  • Lamb stew with pomegranate and herbs
  • Grilled aubergine with walnut sauce (badrijani nigvzit)
  • Hard sheep’s cheese such as Manchego or Ossau-Iraty
Kate Says

"This is the sort of red you pour when you want something a bit different but completely moreish. It’s flavousome without being heavy, with just enough spice to make it interesting. Very drinkable, great value red wine from Georgia."

Producer Info

Vachnadziani Winery is one of Georgia’s oldest wineries, established in 1953 and rooted in the Kakheti region – widely considered the cradle of wine. After falling into disrepair during the Soviet years, it has been revitalised with major investment, blending ancient Georgian winemaking traditions with modern techniques. The estate spans over 1,000 hectares across Kakheti and western Georgia, cultivating 25 grape varieties, most of them indigenous. Their mission is to preserve Georgia’s 8,000-year-old wine culture while producing wines of freshness, depth, and authenticity.

How it’s made:

  • 100% Saperavi from vineyards at 320m altitude in Kakheti
  • Clay and loamy soils with cover grass and organic mineral fertilisers
  • Hand-harvested at optimal ripeness
  • Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve purity
  • Malolactic conversion for a softer, rounded palate
  • Unoaked to highlight the grape’s natural vibrancy

Good to know:

  • Region: Kakheti, Georgia
  • Style: Medium-bodied red
  • Oak Ageing: None (unoaked)
  • Closure: Agglomerated Cork
  • Vegan/Vegetarian: No
  • Cellaring Potential: Drink now or within 3–5 years

Why we love it:

Saperavi is a grape like no other – dark-skinned and pink-fleshed, with natural vibrancy and structure. This bottling captures its essence in an approachable, fruit-driven style, perfect for pairing with Georgian dishes or simply enjoying by the fire.
