Tomintoul PX Quarter Cask 14YO (70cl, 46%)

Get to know: Tomintoul 14 Year Old PX Quarter Cask

A rich, dark Speyside single malt whisky from Tomintoul Distillery, distilled in 2009 and finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry quarter casks.

Tasting Note

Nutty maple and prunes lead the nose, dates and chocolate fudge sitting behind, with fragrant oak coming through underneath. The quarter cask does a lot of work here. Smaller casks mean more wood contact, and it shows in how deep the flavours run. Dark chocolate truffle and maple pecan lead the palate, spiced sultana and roasted nuts building towards a coffee note that carries into the finish. It ends warm, baking spice and chocolate-coated coffee beans lingering well after the glass is empty. Fourteen years and a PX quarter cask finish add up to a properly dense, satisfying dram.

Serving suggestions:

  • Neat, after dinner, with time to sit and unwind
  • Alongside coffee-based desserts or dark chocolate
  • One for the collection if you like tracking distillation years
Kate Says

"Tomintoul's usually the softer, gentler Speyside malt, so it's interesting to see what a PX quarter cask does to that character. It doesn't lose the characteristic softness, it just adds a lot of dark fruit and spice on top. There's a sumptuous sweet richness to this that is ever-so-satisfying."

Producer Info

Tomintoul Distillery began in 1965 and is based in the Cairngorms National Park in Speyside, Scotland. It is the highest village in the highlands surrounded by outstanding natural beauty. The distillery is generally known for an easy-drinking, gentle house style. Master Distiller, Robert Fleming, who is a fourth generation Speyside distiller, has been the custodian of Tomintoul for more than 30 years. It's Robert and his dedicated and passionate team who are responsible for handcrafting every drop of Tomintoul Single Malt. They use traditional production techniques that stretch back hundreds of years, to handcraft a wide range of award-winning Tomintoul Single Malt Scotch Whiskies.
