Get to know: Sombrero Cabernet Franc 2021
Cabernet Franc grown at 1,400 metres in Mendoza, a peppery and savoury Argentinian red wine with a bright, lifted edge.
Tasting Note
Black pepper and graphite catch you first, sitting over cassis, black plum and a warm hint of clove. In the glass it's an intense, deep ruby colour. The fruit is dark and ripe, and bright acidity keeps it lively in the mouth while the tannins stay silky. The pepper hangs on into a lifted, savoury finish. Pour it for anyone who likes their reds with a bit of spice about them.
Top food pairings:
- Grilled lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic
- Sticky BBQ-glazed pork ribs
- Smoky tomato and butter bean stew with crusty bread
Kate Says
"The fruit is from vineyard's at high altitude, so the grapes ripen slowly, and you can taste that edge of freshness in it against the bold, ripe cassis fruit. I'd open it a little while before dinner and have it with lamb straight off the grill, flavoured with rosemary and garlic, something like that."
Producer Info
This wine is produced for Moreno wines from their trusted network of growers. The grapes come from gravel and limestone-rich soils in Mendoza, where drainage is excellent. Cold winters and warm, dry summers give a long, slow ripening season, which holds on to freshness and aromatic depth in the finished wine.
How it's made:
- Cold-soaked for four days before fermentation
- Fermented over 12 days
- Aged for six months in French oak
- A further six months in bottle to integrate and settle the structure

Why we love it:
A peppery, savoury Argentinian red wine that comes into its own next to the barbecue. Its bright acidity cuts through smoky, sticky glazes, and the pepper picks up the char.
