Get to know: Soalheiro Pet Nat NV
A fresh, lightly fizzy Alvarinho with bags of charm.
Tasting Note
This is a vibrant, naturally sparkling wine that’s all about texture and freshness. Expect notes of lemon zest, green apple, and wild herbs, with a gentle spritz and a soft, creamy finish. There’s a light haze in the bottle – all part of the charm – and the bubbles come from the grape’s own sugars, captured during fermentation. No added sugar, no disgorgement, just a deliciously unfiltered taste of Alvarinho.
Top food pairings:
- Grilled courgettes with mint and tahini
- Buttered prawns with garlic and parsley
- Cheese: fresh goat’s cheese or a soft-rind cheese like Brie
Kate Says
"I love Albarino and this fresh, sparkling take on the grape is a delight. You'd expect no less though from Soalheiro, who continue to push what this varietal can do and always with a focus on precise, ripe flavour."
Producer Info
Soalheiro are pioneers of Alvarinho in northern Portugal, with vineyards in Monção and Melgaço – the very top corner of the country. Their wines are known for precision and purity, but this Pét Nat shows a more experimental side.
The fruit comes from granite-rich soils at 100–200 metres above sea level, where a cool Atlantic-influenced climate helps the grapes ripen slowly, preserving acidity and freshness. The wine is made using the ancestral method: bottled mid-ferment with no additions or filtering. The result is a hazy, bottle-fermented sparkler with a raw, expressive style.
How it’s made:
- 100% Alvarinho from high-altitude granite soils
- Natural fermentation starts in tank, finishes in bottle
- No added sugar, no filtering, no disgorgement
- Live yeasts remain in the bottle (expect a gentle haze)
- Zero intervention beyond the bare essentials
