Get to know: Serbal Petit Verdot 2024
Petit Verdot from Tupungato in Mendoza's Uco Valley, an intense Argentinian red wine from Bodega Atamisque.
Tasting Note
This impressive red greets you with a bold hit of blueberry and blackberry with a lift of smoke right behind it. Red fruit, spice and a touch of leather fill in underneath. It pours a purplish red. The palate is intense with good structure, and it's so easy to drink that the bottle might empty quicker than you planned.
Top food pairings:
- Grilled rib-eye, Argentinian asado style
- Slow-cooked lamb shoulder with cumin and garlic
- Smoky black bean and roasted red pepper chilli
Kate Says
"Our buyer Nic tasted this in Didsbury with the team and reckons it's one of the best Petit Verdots we've had, and really good value too. There's no oak on it but there's a smoky note that comes from the grape itself. It's great with steak off the grill, lamb chops, that kind of thing. Give it a bit of air first and see what you think."
Producer Info
Bodega Atamisque grows this wine on its own Finca Atamisque in San José, in the Tupungato department of Mendoza. The vines sit 1,300 metres above sea level on alluvial loam packed with rounded stones over a rocky subsoil, and they're drip-irrigated.
How it's made:
- Vines trained on a spur-pruned double cordon, yielding 8,000 kg per hectare
- Picked by hand in March into 18kg boxes
- Sorted twice, first by bunch and then by individual berry
- Moved into tank by gravity, with no pumps
- Six days of cold maceration at 8°C, then 22 days' fermentation at 25°C in temperature-controlled stainless steel
- Natural, complete malolactic fermentation
- No oak ageing

Why we love it:
This Argentinian red wine from Tupungato is packed with blueberry and has a smoky edge. It scored 16.5/20 from Jancis Robinson, and it's a great match for anything off the barbecue.
