Get to know: Schwarz Wine Co. The Grower GSM 2022
A richly expressive Australian red wine from the world-famous Barossa Valley, crafted with fruit from some of the region’s finest old-vine growers.
Tasting Note
The Grower GSM 2022 is a smooth, full-flavoured blend with loads of ripe dark fruit and classic Barossa warmth. Medium-deep crimson in colour, it opens with aromas of blackberry, musky plum, strawberry, and a hint of charcuterie. On the palate, it’s plush and seductive, offering layers of dark berry, sweet spice, and subtle meaty richness, supported by silky, well-framed tannins. A touch of whole-bunch lift brings freshness, while the finish is long, chocolatey, and beautifully rounded. A standout choice for lovers of generous yet balanced GSM blends from the Barossa Valley.
Top food pairings:
- Charcuterie and cheese boards
- Slow-cooked lamb shoulder with rosemary
- Chocolate desserts and flourless chocolate cake
Kate Says
"I love how Jason Schwarz champions the growers behind these old-vine vineyards. This GSM has that unmistakable Barossa generosity, but with a real sense of craft and intuition. It’s the kind of red you open for an evening when you want something comforting, polished, and deeply satisfying."
Producer Info
Schwarz Wine Co. was founded by self-taught winemaker Jason Schwarz, who cut his teeth learning from some of the Barossa Valley’s most respected winemakers before producing his first small-batch wines in the early 2000s. His close relationships with local vignerons give him access to exceptional old-vine Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro – fruit that forms the backbone of his minimal-intervention approach. The Grower range pays tribute to the dedicated growers he’s worked with since 2001, celebrating the region’s heritage through thoughtful, small-batch winemaking.
How it’s made:
- Varieties: 52% Grenache, 46% Shiraz, 2% Mataro
- Fruit harvested between 11 March and 12 April 2022 from nine growers across five Barossa sub-regions
- 13% whole-bunch inclusion to enhance fragrance and structure
- Fermentation across ten parcels, with 36% matured in small tanks for vibrancy and crunchy tannins
- The remainder aged in vats and large-format French oak for savoury complexity
