Old-vine Mourvèdre from one parcel on the La Clape massif, fermented without sulphur - the biggest red wine in our Languedoc range.
Black cherry in the glass, so dark it stains it. The nose is all very ripe Mourvèdre - blackcurrant, blackberry and a cool menthol streak that stops the ripeness taking over. The palate is full and round and the tannins are extraordinarily silky for a wine with this much muscle, and then the finish opens out onto spice and garrigue and keeps going. It is a big wine that never feels like hard work. Fifteen degrees of alcohol, carried without effort, and years of life ahead of it.
Top food pairings:
"Nic calls this the Languedoc's answer to a serious Puglian - think Settebraccia, and then some. It's a hand-sewn cuvée off one parcel of old vines, vinified with no sulphur and no aromatic yeasts, and it's for the big-red drinker who wonders, what next?"
Sarrat de Goundy sit between the garrigue and the Mediterranean in AOC La Clape - 150 square kilometres of Cretaceous limestone, thirteen named winds, and just 778 hectares of vines in the whole appellation. Olivier Calix runs the estate with his mother Rosy and has been experimenting with terracotta since 2013, with around twenty-five 155-litre jars now in use for the reds. Around 400 sheep graze between the rows over winter.
The top La Clape red wine in the range and the one that makes the case for the appellation. Mourvèdre-dominated, low-yielding, made with almost nothing added, and silkier than a wine of this size has any right to be.
