San Marzano, TALO Malvasia Nera 2024

Get to know: San Marzano TALO Malvasia Nera 2024

A rich and characterful Italian red wine from Salento, Puglia in southern Italy.

Tasting Note

San Marzano TALO Malvasia Nera is a smooth, full-bodied red that delivers real warmth and generosity in the glass. Deep ruby in colour with inviting aromas of baked orange peel, vanilla, ripe Morello cherry, warm spice and a subtle hint of thyme. On the palate, this Malvasia Nera shows plush dark fruit flavours layered with sweet spice, gentle oak influence and a touch of citrus peel complexity. The texture is rounded and velvety, leading into a long, soft finish with lingering vanilla and spice notes. This is a beautifully expressive Puglian red wine, offering both richness and elegance in equal measure.

Top food pairings:

  • Slow-cooked beef ragu with pappardelle
  • Aubergine parmigiana with tomato and basil
  • Roast lamb with rosemary and garlic
Kate Says

"Malvasia Nera is one of those brilliant southern Italian grapes that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves, but when it’s done well like this, it really sings. You get that lovely mix of ripe red fruit and gentle spice, with a softness that makes it so easy to drink. It’s a great reminder of just how expressive Italy’s indigenous varietals can be."

Producer Info

San Marzano is a forward-thinking cooperative in Puglia, formed in 1962 by a small group of local vine growers and now representing over 1200 growers. Deeply rooted in the region of Salento, they combine tradition with modern winemaking precision to produce wines of consistent quality and character. Their philosophy is built on passion, collaboration and respect for the land, working closely with growers who tend each vineyard with care and pride.

How it’s made:

  • Varieties: 100% Malvasia Nera
  • Harvested in the second week of September at optimal ripeness for concentration and balance
  • Temperature-controlled maceration for around 10 days to extract colour, aroma and structure
  • Fermentation with selected yeasts to preserve fruit purity
  • Aged in French oak barrels for 4–6 months to add subtle spice and complexity

Why we love it:

This Italian red wine is all about plush fruit, gentle spice and effortless drinkability. The combination of Malvasia Nera and careful oak ageing gives a beautifully rounded style that works brilliantly with food, yet is equally satisfying on its own. A standout Puglian red wine that brings a taste of southern Italy straight to the table.
