The 2021 is built from a classic Douro blend - Touriga Nacional brings structure and aromatic lift, Touriga Franca adds layers of floral elegance, while Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz contribute depth and spice. Pour a glass and you'll notice the colour immediately: dense, inky, almost brooding. The nose follows suit with dark bramble fruits, violets, and a subtle minerality that speaks to those schist soils. On the palate, it's remarkably elegant for a wine of this concentration - ripe blackberry and plum, hints of graphite, and fine-grained tannins that carry the finish beautifully. There's power here, but it's completely in balance.
This is a wine that loves food, and also need time to open up. Decant for 2 hours or more before serving. Think slow-braised beef cheeks with red wine and bay leaf, a hearty lamb shoulder studded with rosemary and garlic, or even a rich mushroom and chestnut Wellington if you're cooking meat-free. It'll also stand up brilliantly to mature hard cheeses - a wedge of aged Manchego would be a fine companion.
"We've followed Vale Meão for years, and visited their vineyard in 2024 - this vintage sits among their finest work at this level. It's serious wine without being stuffy, generous without being overblown. If you've ever dismissed Portuguese reds, let this be the bottle to convince you of their quality. It is exactly the kind of discovery we live for at Reserve Wines - quality, character, and genuine soul in every glass."
Quinta do Vale Meão's 2021 Tinto is the kind of bottle that reminds you why Portuguese wine deserves a permanent spot at the table - and probably at the head of it.
The estate itself carries serious heritage. Tucked into the dramatic, sun-baked slopes of the Douro Superior, Vale Meão was originally part of the legendary Barca Velha estate before the Olazabal family reclaimed it in 1994. Today, Francisco Olazabal crafts wines that honour that history while pushing forward with real ambition. This isn't a producer resting on reputation; every vintage feels considered, deliberate, and unmistakably tied to place. What makes this place special is the complex terroir. The result of three centuries of agriculture is a mix of schist, granite and alluvial terrains which all contribute different characteristics to the fruit. The careful selection and blending of grapes between these are the key to the originality of the final wines.
Of the 2021, winemaker Francisco Olazabal says:
‘The 2021 was a quiet year in terms of grape growing, with conditions being consistent throughout the year allowing for a classic vintage of Quinta do Vale Meão. The quality of both the Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca were particularly good, making up 53% and 40% of the blend respectively. I am very happy with the results of 2021, a wine that can be drunk now or will continue to age gracefully for years to come.’
