Hints of blue on the rim with a predominantly dark red appearance, the aroma is somewhat subdued with low key primary dark fruit aromas and silky character; on the palate, the structure is very tight which hides some superb dark fruits of blackberries and dark plums, leading to a long powerful but balanced finish. The colour and structure of this wine indicates this a port that will benefit from long term ageing.
The Bioma Crusted originates from the Pisca vineyard, as for the Bioma Vintage Port. This ancient vineyard (vinha velha) has been converted to organic viticulture and it's vines exceed the age of 80 with low yields always result in amazing port wines that showcase the terroir and the vintage. In year's where a Vintage Port decalration isn't possible, the wine is released as a crusted port.
As the name suggests, Crusted Port will throw a natural deposit in the bottle with time, therefore it is important to decant it before serving. The Niepoort Bioma Crusted Port (Bottled 2014) is most appealing in its youth, but will also benefit from several years of bottle ageing, during which it should be stored lying down.
