Get to know: Niepoort, Sempar
Tasting Note
Niepoort so admired the wines made in the Alentejo region, they have begun making their own wine there. This bold, ripe, fresh red from a field blend of grapes is the result, and it is delicious. You'll find an exuberant nose of expressive fruit with strawberry and raspberry as well as liquorice and an earthy minerality with more complexity as it opens up. It is very fresh on the well-rounded palate with bright acidity and noticable tannins that make it very food friendly. There's a satisfyingly long finish too.
Try this with oven-roasted cod or venison sausages.
Kate Says
"Niepoort are known for their excellent Ports and they make wonderful wines too in the Douro region of Portugal. This is a fresher wine than their usual style and is full of character. One for a dinner party with your foodie friends."
Producer Info
“Sempar” means “unequalled”, “unique”, “incomparable” – a name which perfectly represents the style of Niepoort’s wine philosophy: uncomplicated wines which give maximum expression to the vineyards from which they are created.
A match of Alentejo heat and mountain freshness.
The large majority of the grapes was destemmed. Fermentation took place in concrete amphorae in which the wine also aged for 36 months, without too much extraction and minimal added sulphur.
