Lyrarakis, Rouma Vineyard Micro-Batch Thrapsasiri 2024

Get to know: Lyrarakis Rouma Vineyard Micro-Batch Thrapsathiri 2024

An expressive Greek white wine from the rugged vineyards of Crete, showcasing the rare and characterful Thrapsathiri grape.

Tasting Note

Lyrarakis Experimental Micro-Batch series is a fascinating insight into both Cretan biodiversity and Lyrarakis own dedication to preserving it. This is a textured yet refreshing white wine. Bright straw in colour with lifted aromas of peach, apricot, citrus peel, wild herbs, white flowers, and gentle sweet spice from oak ageing. On the palate, this Cretan white balances ripe stone fruit flavours with a creamy mouthfeel and a streak of mineral freshness that keeps everything lively and focused. The Thrapsathiri grape brings both richness and acidity, finishing with a long, aromatic aftertaste and subtle savoury complexity. This is a distinctive, food-friendly Greek white wine with real depth and personality.

Top food pairings:

  • Creamy seafood risotto with lemon and herbs
  • Roast chicken with garlic and oregano
  • Pasta with grilled vegetables and feta
Kate Says

"If you enjoy textured white wines like Viognier or richer styles of Chardonnay, this is well worth a try. It’s got that same generous stone fruit character, but with a fresher, more herbal Mediterranean twist."

Producer Info

Lyrarakis Wines was founded in Crete in 1966 by brothers Manolis and Sotiris Lyrarakis and has become one of the leading names in modern Greek wine. The family is renowned for reviving rare indigenous Cretan grape varieties, helping save several from extinction while showcasing the island’s unique terroirs. The Rouma vineyard sits beside an oak forest at 450 metres altitude, where cooler conditions allow the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic clarity. Sustainability and organic viticulture are central to the winery’s philosophy, with regenerative farming practices helping preserve the landscape for future generations.

How it’s made:

  • Varieties: 100% Thrapsathiri
  • Harvested from 30-year-old dry-farmed organic vines for concentration and freshness
  • Grapes were destemmed and gently crushed before pressing
  • Fermented partly in old Austrian and French oak barrels for texture and complexity
  • Matured in large oak foudres and barrels for up to 9 months before bottling unfined and unfiltered

Good to know:

  • Region: Patsideros, Central Crete, Greece
  • Style: Dry white wine, textured and mineral
  • Closure: Cork
  • Vegan: Yes
  • ABV: 12.5%
  • Vintage: 2024

Why we love it:

This beautifully layered Greek white wine combines ripe orchard and stone fruit with freshness, texture, and subtle oak influence. The rare Thrapsathiri grape gives it a distinctive personality that makes it a brilliant alternative to richer Chardonnay styles, especially with creamy seafood, roast chicken, or Mediterranean-inspired dishes.
