Lyrarakis, Kotsifali Organic 2024

Get to know: Lyrarakis, Kotsifali Organic 2024

A vibrant Greek red wine made from Crete’s native Kotsifali grape in the rugged vineyards of Central Crete.

Tasting Note

Lyrarakis, Kotsifali is a juicy yet savoury organic red that shows why Kotsifali is one of Crete’s most exciting indigenous grape varieties. Bright mid-ruby in colour with aromas of red cherry, blackberry, dark plum and a touch of sweet spice. On the palate, it’s supple and medium-bodied with fresh acidity, soft fruity tannins and plenty of juicy dark fruit balanced by a dry, savoury edge. It finishes with a gentle spicy edge and plenty of freshness that makes you want another glass. This is a brilliantly food-friendly Cretan red wine.

Top food pairings:

  • Roast gammon or pork with Mediterranean herbs
  • Chargrilled lamb kebabs or kofta
  • Tomato-based pasta dishes with salty cheese
Kate Says

"If you enjoy juicy reds like Merlot or lighter styles of Syrah, this is a brilliant Greek alternative. It’s got loads of dark fruit and freshness, but keeps things dry, savoury and really versatile to enjoy with food."

Producer Info

Lyrarakis was founded in Crete in 1966 by brothers Manolis and Sotiris Lyrarakis and is now run by the second generation of the family. The winery has become one of Greece’s leading champions of indigenous Cretan grape varieties, helping to rescue several rare grapes from extinction. Farming organically and working sustainably in the vineyards, they focus on producing authentic wines that express Crete’s mountainous terroir, warm Mediterranean climate and unique native varieties.

How it’s made:

  • Varieties: 100% Kotsifali
  • Hand-harvested with picking dates chosen through careful berry tasting for optimum flavour balance
  • Fermented with 7 days of skin maceration to build colour, texture and savoury character
  • Temperature-controlled fermentation between 25°C and 28°C
  • Produced from organically farmed vineyards at 500m altitude with no irrigation

Why we love it:
