Tasting Note

This elegant Portuguese sparkling wine is bursting with fresh aromas of jasmine, apple skin, lemon zest and delicate white plum. On the palate, it’s dry but not harsh – think more crisp apple than searing acidity – with a lovely mousse and a clean, slightly savoury finish that hints at fresh bread or biscuit.

A fantastic alternative to Champagne from Portugal, it’s got enough zip to enjoy as an aperitif but enough character to stand up to food too.

Pairs well with:

  • A spring risotto with asparagus and lemon
  • Salt cod fritters or grilled white fish
  • Manchego or a young goats’ cheese – the fizz cuts through beautifully
Kate Says

If you’re after something with the finesse of Champagne but without the pomp (or the price), this Luis Pato Maria Gomes Espumante is the one. Super fresh, floral, a little toasty on the finish – it’s one of my favourite bottles to crack open when friends pop round.

Producer Info

Luis Pato is a bit of a legend in Portugal’s Bairrada sparkling wine scene. He’s been making wine since 1980, transforming his family’s vineyards from bulk wine production into one of Portugal’s most exciting estates. A pioneer in the region, he’s known for low-intervention methods and a deep respect for local grape varieties – especially Maria Gomes (aka Fernão Pires), the star of this bottle.

The grapes are picked early to preserve acidity and fermented cool in stainless steel to keep those fresh floral notes intact. Second fermentation happens in bottle, using the traditional method (just like Champagne), with a short ageing period on the lees to give it fine bubbles and a gentle toasty complexity.

The sandy and chalky-clay soils add a crisp minerality, and while not certified organic, Luis Pato follows natural winemaking principles with minimal sulphites and no animal products, making this a brilliant vegan-friendly sparkling wine from Portugal.
