Lagg Corriecravie (70cl 55%)

Get to know: Lagg Corriecravie

A peated island single malt whisky from Lagg Distillery on the Isle of Arran, finished in Oloroso sherry hogsheads.

Tasting Note

Dark chocolate and spiced red berries greet you first, the peat sitting underneath rather than shouting over everything else. Lagg's smoke is softer and more heathery than a big Islay malt. The palate is rich and genuinely mouth-watering, charred embers and hazelnut running through it, before the Oloroso sherry hogsheads add their own layer of dried fruit and sweet spice. It finishes on charred oak and smoke, hazelnut and dark chocolate lingering well after the glass is down. Bottled at 55%, non-chill filtered, with nothing added.

Serving suggestions:

  • Neat first, to catch the peat and sherry balance at full strength
  • A few drops of water if 55% feels like a lot on a first pour
  • Good for anyone who wants a smoky whisky with a sherried, fruitier edge than a typical Islay
Kate Says

"Lagg's still a young distillery, and this is exactly the kind of release that shows what it's capable of: proper smoke, but with a fruitiness from the sherry cask that keeps it from being one-note. Well worth trying if you know your peated whisky already."
