K Pilota Getariako Txakolina 2022

Get to know: K Pilota Hondarrabi Zuri Sobre Lías

The white you want in your hand in the garden this weekend. A fresh, salty Basque white from the Atlantic coast.

Tasting Note

One for anyone who likes their whites sharp and lively. It's pale greenish-yellow in the glass, with citrus peel, cut grass and a chalky freshness that tells you straight away it was grown by the sea. Time on the lees rounds out the texture, while the bright acidity keeps everything taut and clean. It finishes properly saline and mouthwatering, the sort that has you reaching for another glass. A good one to open outside when the weather's warm.
New to the grape? If you like a crisp Picpoul or a bone-dry Muscadet, you'll be right at home here.

Top food pairings:

  • Fresh oysters, prawns or grilled shellfish
  • Sushi and sashimi
  • Pintxos and padron peppers
Kate Says

"I love how alive this wine is. It's bright, salty and so refreshing that the bottle empties quicker than you'd think once the sun's out. Sat outside with some seafood and good company, this is exactly what I want in my glass."

Producer Info

Bodega K5 farms 15 hectares of estate vineyards overlooking the Cantabrian Sea near Aia in Spain's Basque Country. Steep slopes, granite and slate soils, and the cooling Atlantic climate shape wines with unmistakable freshness, while careful, low-intervention winemaking allows the character of Hondarrabi Zuri and the coastal terroir to shine through.

How it's made:

  • Varieties: 100% Hondarrabi Zuri
  • Hand-selected grapes harvested at the arrival of autumn
  • Cold pre-fermentation maceration after gravity-fed reception at the winery
  • Fermented in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts
  • Aged for at least five months on its lees in stainless steel tanks

Good to know:

  • Region: Getariako Txakolina, Basque Country, Spain
  • Style: White, still
  • Closure: Cork
  • Vegan: Not supplied
  • ABV: 11.5%
  • Vintage: 2022

Why we love it:

Everything we want from a warm-weather white: fresh, full of citrus, and finishing on that salty tang that gives away where it's from. It works with all sorts of seafood and tapas, and it's just as good well chilled on its own.
