Tempranillo and Garnacha from 70- and 90-year-old Rioja vines - a Spanish red wine given 42 months in oak.
Deep cherry red, shading to russet at the rim as you'd expect from a wine this age. Dark fruit and orange peel open the nose, with liquorice, spice, tobacco, fallen leaves and a hint of nuts behind them. The palate is intense but smooth, with a sweet, enveloping start and good acidity running through. The aftertaste is long and complex, the sort of finish you notice for a while after the glass is empty.
Top food pairings:
"Tempranillo from Seventy-year-old vines and ninety-year-old Garnacha went into this one, and then it spent three and a half years in oak before anyone put it in a bottle. That's a lot of time, and it shows in how rounded it is. Open it for something special and let it get some air first."
Hacienda López de Haro makes this Gran Reserva in Rioja from two very different sites. The Tempranillo grows on south-facing clay-limestone terraces at the foot of the Sierra de Toloño in the Sonsierra, and the Garnacha on north-facing clay-ferrous terraces in Cárdenas, in the Alto Najerilla. Both are at high altitude.
A mature Spanish red wine with real depth, from very old vines and years in oak. A lovely bottle to open for lamb or a long, unhurried dinner.
