Get to know: Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco 2023
Barbaresco DOCG Nebbiolo from the Rabajà and Trifolera vineyards in Piedmont
Tasting Note
Rose petals and red cherry open the nose, with a little leather and earthiness underneath. The palate is rich, with crisp acidity and real minerality, carrying red cherry, strawberry, raspberry, dried rose petals and crushed herbs. Tannins stay firm through the finish. Give it a couple of hours in a decanter if you're opening it now, or leave it in the cellar for another five to ten years.
Top food pairings:
- Roast pheasant with sage and butter
- Braised beef cheeks in red wine
- Wild mushroom and lentil ragù
Kate Says
"I'd pull the cork a couple of hours before dinner and let it breathe in a decanter. This one comes from parcels in the Rabajà and Trifolera vineyards and spends 18 months in big Slavonian oak barrels, so it has plenty of structure. Open one now, and put another away for five to ten years if you can."
Producer Info
Giuseppe Cortese founded the winery in 1971 on top of the Rabajà hill in Barbaresco, building on the family's earlier small-scale winemaking. Giuseppe works with his children: Pier Carlo oversees the winemaking, and Tiziana looks after the commercial side and hospitality.
How it's made:
- Grapes come from parcels in the Rabajà and Trifolera vineyards and are harvested by hand
- Fermented in cement vats
- Aged for 18 months in Slavonian oak barrels of 17 to 25 hectolitres, each at least five or six years old
- A minimum of six months in bottle before release
