A classic example of white port, Fonseca deliver the authentic taste of Portuguese summer. Pale straw in colour, this wine strikes a lovely balance between ripe fruit and a touch of delicate acidity, with just the right amount of oak from the wood ageing. It’s full and fruity on the palate with flavours of citrus, pear and apricot with a lovely crispness that keeps it refreshing. The finish has a nutty almond and hazelnut layer that lingers beautifully, making it a real pleasure to drink.
Try this as an excellent aperitif. It can also be drunk poured over ice in a glass, topped up with tonic and a leaf of fresh mint. Drink with salted almonds or olives.
White Port can be a bit of a holiday revelation if you enjoy a trip to Portugal, and this is one that doesn't need the sunshine to sparkle. Fresh and fruity with a nice bit of nuttiness. It's spot on for sipping chilled in the sunshine or as a pre-dinner tipple. Something a bit different!
Founded in 1815, Fonseca is considered one of the leading Port Houses, famed for its Vintage Ports. Fonseca’s three Quintas are at the heart of the House’s idiosyncratic style of Port. The vineyards are located on soils of schist that has useful water retention which helps combat the effects of the hot, dry summer temperatures. The two Pinhão Valley estates of Quinta do Cruzeiro and Quinta de Santo António, have supplied Fonseca for over a hundred years. Quinta do Panascal in the Távora Valley has a more recent association with Fonseca, but its wines perfectly complement those of the two Pinhão Valley properties. Quinta do Panascal was one of the first properties to have organically certified vineyards as early as 1992, whilst Quinta de Santo António is a prize-winning model of sustainable viticulture producing both grapes and olive oil.
Fonseca Siroco is a dry white port first introduced in the 1950s and named after the warm wind which blows over the mediterranean from North Africa. It is a blend of classic white Port grape varieties, predominantly Malvasia Fina with smaller proportions of Gouveio, Viosinho, Rabigato and Arinto, grown on the cooler, higher vineyards of the Douro Valley. To achieve its crisp dry finish, the wine is made in the traditional way, by foot
treading and is allowed to ferment for longer than other styles of Port before it is fortified. Ageing in small oak vats gives Siroco its smoothness as well as its attractive ripe fruit flavours and delicate nuttiness.
