FIO Piu Piu Pet Nat NV

Get to know: Niepoort KETTERN Piu Piu Pét Nat NV

German sparkling Riesling wine from the steep, slate vineyards of the Mosel, now with a few years of bottle age adding extra depth and character.

Tasting Note

Niepoort KETTERN Piu Piu Pét Nat NV is a lively yet gently evolved sparkling Riesling that shows how even pét nat styles can gain complexity with a little time in bottle. Now with around 3–4 years of age, the wine has softened and settled, developing a more rounded, harmonious profile while keeping its signature freshness. Pale cloudy lemon in colour with a fine, gentle fizz, it opens with aromas of baked apple, preserved lemon, white flowers, and a subtle bready note from time on lees. On the palate, this Mosel Riesling pét nat is supple and textured, with flavours of orchard fruit, citrus, and a touch of honeyed richness layered over a light mineral backbone. The mousse is softer and more integrated, giving a creamy feel, while a fresh line of acidity keeps everything lifted. A beautifully balanced German sparkling wine that blends youthful energy with a touch of maturity.

Top food pairings:

  • Light seafood dishes like prawns or sushi
  • Spicy street food or Thai dishes
  • Soft cheeses or picnic-style grazing boards
Kate Says

"This has really come into its own – still fresh and lively, but with a bit more softness and depth now. Perfect when you want something a little different but still easy to enjoy."

Producer Info

FIO Wines is a collaboration between the Kettern family of the Mosel and the Niepoort family of Portugal, led by Dirk Niepoort. Based around the steep vineyards of Piesport and Leiwen, they produce wines rooted in tradition but with an experimental edge. Farming is organic, with no herbicides or pesticides, and a hands-off philosophy in both vineyard and cellar. Their approach champions time, patience, and minimal intervention, resulting in distinctive Mosel Riesling wines with real personality.

How it’s made:

  • Varieties: 100% Riesling
  • Blend includes wines aged 4–5 years in cold stainless steel before bottling
  • Gently pressed with no fining or filtration
  • Native yeast fermentation (50% stainless steel, 50% old fuder and doppelfuder barrels)
  • Secondary fermentation occurs naturally in bottle (pét nat method), with minimal sulphur added at bottling

Good to know:

  • Region: Mosel, Germany
  • Style: Sparkling, pét nat, off-dry, light-bodied
  • Closure: Crown cap
  • Vegan: Yes (unfined and unfiltered)
  • ABV: 11%
  • Vintage: NV

Why we love it:

This aged Mosel sparkling Riesling shows how pét nat can evolve into something more textural and complex over time. With softened bubbles, layered orchard fruit, and a gentle savoury edge, it’s a unique and delicious take on German sparkling wine that’s ready to enjoy now.
