A rich and characterful Chinese red wine from the high-altitude vineyards of Ningxia, one of China’s most exciting emerging wine regions.
Fei Tswei Magma Red Blend is a generous, full-bodied red that combines ripe fruit with freshness thanks to Ningxia’s high-altitude climate. Deep ruby in colour with inviting aromas of cassis, bramble fruit, dark cherry and a touch of cedar spice. On the palate, this Ningxia red wine shows plenty of richness, with layers of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum supported by gentle spice and subtle oak notes. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Dunkelfelder gives the wine both structure and a smooth, rounded texture. It finishes long and balanced, with ripe tannins and a hint of savoury spice. A confident and expressive Chinese red that shows just how exciting Ningxia’s modern wine scene has become.
Top food pairings:
"If you’re curious about Chinese wine, this is a brilliant place to start. It drinks a bit like a generous Bordeaux-style blend, but with its own distinctive character – rich, smooth and packed with dark fruit."
Fei Tswei Winery is part of the new wave of ambitious producers helping to establish Ningxia as the heart of modern Chinese wine. Their 85-hectare vineyard was planted in 2013 on the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains at around 1,160 metres above sea level. The combination of warm sunny days, cool nights and very low rainfall creates ideal conditions for producing high-quality grapes, allowing many growers to farm organically. Hand-harvested fruit and careful vineyard management help Fei Tswei craft expressive, structured wines that showcase the remarkable potential of this fast-rising Chinese wine region.
This Chinese red wine from Ningxia is a great introduction to one of the world’s most talked-about new wine regions. With its ripe cassis fruit, smooth texture and Bordeaux-inspired blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it’s both intriguing and reassuringly drinkable.
