Tasting Note

Here is a classic, uncomplicated Zweigelt that is a great introduction to the charms of this grape variety. It has a lovely lifted fruit flavour and aroma, with violets, red fruits and black pepper spice on the finish.

Producer Info

Arnold Holzer represents the fifth generation of Holzers to farm this small estate in the heart of Wagram, which he took over in 2010 aged just twenty-three, and it's been in organic conversion since 2017. Like his long-time friend Martin Diwald, his vineyards are dotted around Grossriedenthal in Wagram. The loess (clay) soils lend a pronounced fruit-rich quality to all the wines.

The grapes come from a mixture of the Eschenhof Holzer vineyards and some from neighbouring friends in Grossreidenthal. Arnold Holzer puts the grapes through relatively cool fermentation for a red wine, around 22-24°C. The wine is then stored in very large, very old wooden barrels (1,000 litres to 6,500 litres) for nearly a year.
