Get to know: Eagle Rare 10yo Bourbon (70cl, 45%)
Ten years in the barrel at Buffalo Trace - a smooth Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey, bottled at 45%.
Tasting Note
Caramelised sugar, toffee and honey come first on the nose, with polished oak and a hint of citrus peel behind them. The palate is light and smooth, with caramel and honey sweetness, a little white pepper and a bitter orange edge, like marmalade. Salty-sweet popcorn turns up in the middle. The finish is short and tidy, with caramel and orange.
Serving suggestions:
- Neat in a tumbler, or with a splash of water
- Over one large ice cube with a strip of orange peel
- In an Old Fashioned with a sugar cube and bitters
Kate Says
"Ten years in the barrel is a long time, and you can taste the caramel and honey that come with it. I'd pour it neat first, then try a splash of water. After that, an Old Fashioned is a good use of it."
