Get to know: Dveri-Pax, Riesling Old Vines
Tasting Note
A high quality Slovenian Riesling that will appeal to fans of German Riesling and anyone else who enjoys a characterful dry white. The nose is intense, fruity, juicy with ripe peaches and apricots, honey, orange peel, but also saffron, cloves, with touch of noble rot. The wine is still lifted, layered and aromatic. There is a touch of residual sugar in the style of Mosel. Medium bodied with intense character which is persistent and long.
Try this with roast pork and apple sauce.
Kate Says
"We loved this Riesling which really stood out at the end of a long day of tasting. It’s very good and has a bit of age giving it extra complexity and depth, making this excellent value. I'd enjoy this with some crispy roast pork belly."
Producer Info
Slovenia is ideally placed to ripen a range of excellent grape varieties and indeed in this corner of Europe wedged between Croatia and Italy has a very long history. In Jarenina, wines have been produced since 1139 by the Benedictine monastic community of Admont in Austria, and the vineyards of their Dveri-Pax (Door of Peace) Estate in the regions of Maribor and Jeruzalem now extend to over 70 hectares of some of the prettiest and steepest vineyards.
The winery has managed to become one of the most modern wineries in Slovenia in recent years. In addition to Furmint and Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and their sparkling wines have also received awards and top ratings, for example as part of the renowned Decanter World Wine Awards in London.
This wine is made from fruit grown 30 year old vines in a single vineyard, picked late in the harvest. Fermented in stainless steel.
