Get to know: Domaine Perraud, Saint Véran
Tasting Note
Produced from what the Perraud's call 'young vines' - 20-25 years old Chardonnay vines - this crisp, dry white is both full-bodied and yet with a mineral edge which balances the richness of the Chardonnay. Bright golden yellow in colour with Apricot and citrus fruits on the nose and a smooth, round palate with classic white Burgundian minerality. This Saint-Véran is a creamy and elegant wine with crisp acidity and a long finish.
Kate Says
"I love the effortless style of this Saint-Véran Chardonnay. There's an extra intensity, creaminess and a lovely acidity on the finish that makes it so appealing. I'd enjoy it with a pot of mussels."
Producer Info
Until 2005, the Perraud family was one of many making their living from growing grapes for the local co-operative. Encouraged by his parents at the age of 24, Jean-Christophe Perraud began to make and bottle wine from the family’s 30 hectares of Bourgogne, Mâcon and Saint-Véran vineyards, all of which are farmed organically. The wines show remarkable elegance and complexity at modest price tags. Domaine Perraud is a fine example of a young producer striking out on his own, with the family’s vineyards, to create what will soon be one of the Mâconnais’ most respected domaines.
The Saint-Véran is sourced from the Perraud's own vineyards in the Maçonnais and the commune of Prissé. The distinctive clay and chalk soils give extra power and richness to the otherwise elegant, aromatic palate. The white-chalk pebbles absorb sun during the day and reflect it during the night to extend ripening. After a long ferment using wild yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. It then matured on its lees for a further six to eight months prior to bottling.
This wine is suitable for consumption by Vegetarians and Vegans.
