Domaine Eric Forest, Pouilly-Fuisse 1er Cru "Les Crays" 2020
Get to know: Domaine Eric Forest, Pouilly-Fuisse Les Crays 2020
Les crays is one of 22 vineyards in Pouilly Fuisse getting the 1er cru status in 2020… there weren’t any 1er cru recognised until then. So this bottle is his first ever 1er Cru and what’s in the bottle justifies the title. There’s the buttery oak but it’s beautifully balanced by crisp ripe apples. The nose will keep you coming back for it, the length is amazing. It’s top class really. One to stick a couple of in the cellar and revisit in 5 years.
Eric is a star vigneron, based in the village of Vergisson, and now has 6 hectares of vines planted between 1930 and 1979. He has inherited a great knowledge of nature and biodynamics from his grandfather and this has been a major influence in his approach to viticulture and winemaking. All grapes are handpicked and fermented and matured for ten to fifteen months in barriques and demi-muids. The wines are hand bottled and are, usually, unfiltered. “Les Crays” is situated on the warm, exposed southern side of the Vergisson hill and is planted on blue marl and limestone. The resulting wines are full, rich, saline and minerally with great length and aging potential.
