Get to know: Domaine de Saje Châteauneuf-du-Pape Tradition
A powerful and polished southern Rhône red – full of dark fruit, spice and classic Châteauneuf warmth. Big, bold, and built for hearty food.
Tasting Note
This is a textbook Châteauneuf-du-Pape, blending Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and a handful of other local varieties to create a rich, full-bodied red with loads of depth and personality. There’s ripe blackberry, baked plum and black cherry on the nose, followed by warming spice, leather and a touch of garrigue (that herbal wild shrub character so typical of the region).
Despite its power, it’s beautifully balanced – smooth tannins, lovely freshness, and a long, satisfying finish.
Top food pairings:
- Aubergine and lentil moussaka
- Slow-roast lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic
- Cheese: aged comté or a firm French tomme
This is proper Sunday roast wine, or something to bring out for a special dinner. Decant if you’ve got time, or just let it open up in the glass.
Kate Says
“This is the kind of red I love when I’m in the mood for something big and generous. It’s got all the power you want from Châteauneuf but with a really lovely polish to it. Great now, but will age nicely too.”
Producer Info
Domaine de Saje is a small, family-run estate based in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with vineyards across several of the region’s key terroirs – including the famous galets roulés (big rounded stones) that store and reflect heat onto the vines. The “Tradition” cuvée brings together grapes from different plots to give a well-rounded, classic expression of the appellation.
How it’s made:
- Blend of Grenache (majority), Syrah, Mourvèdre and other permitted varieties
- Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted before fermentation
- Fermented in concrete and stainless steel for purity of fruit
- Aged in a mix of neutral oak and vat to soften and integrate flavours
The result is a classic southern Rhône red – rich, spicy, and full of that unmistakable Châteauneuf character, with both power and finesse.
