The wines of Gigondas are bold and rich and this is a delicious example of that style. The nose is complex and refined with blackberry, blackcurrant, plum and cherry fruit with some peppery spice. The tasty, fleshy and full palate dominated by notes of cherry and blackberry with chocolate and tobacco. It is finely balanced with good weight and acidity. It all feels very harmonious. The finish has flavours of cocoa and smokey notes and fine grain tannins.
Decant for a couple of hours and try this with roast beef.
"If you like the wines of Châteauneuf-Du-Pape, you should give Gigondas a try. It's only 17km away and is similarly full and rich, but often better value. Domaine Burle's is a rich and fruity delight and is a great match for a beef wellington."
Damien and Florent Burle took over the running of the family estate in Gigondas from their father Edmond in 2004. Sharing the responsibilites in the vineyard and the winery between them, they aim to make classic Southern Rhone wines that are bursting with life. The blend here is Grenache and Syrah in equal parts, from a 1ha plot of 40 year old vines from two plots located on the neighborhoods "La Fouille" (which has marl-limestone soil) and "Les Florets" (which has clay soil).
Fermented in concrete vats for 21 days and then aged in concrete and stainless steel tanks for 12 months.
Only 4000 bottles made.
