Super fresh Beaujolais-Villages Gamay from André Colonge in Lancié, released on the third Thursday of November: a light, juicy French red wine from Beaujolais.
Expect ripe red berries first: raspberry and cherry, with maybe a darker blackcurrant edge after a hot, dry summer. There's a little spice and an earthy streak underneath, and last year's smooth minerality should be back. On the palate it's light and juicy, finishing fresh. Small berries in a dry year can mean extra colour and concentration, so this vintage may show a bit more depth than a typical Nouveau. Open it with friends and see what you think.
Top food pairings:
Beaujolais Nouveau is all about fun. Light and juicy wines bursting with ripe red berry fruit. It is a wine to be enjoyed lightly chilled with friends over some cheese or charcuterie. We are delighted to Andre Colonge Nouveau wine for the second time after last year's popular release.
Domaine André Colonge et Fils is a 30-hectare family estate in Lancié, surrounded by the Beaujolais crus of Fleurie, Morgon, Chiroubles and Moulin-à-Vent. Brothers Landry and Samuel run it, with their father Serge, who is semi-retired. Landry has moved into his grandparents' house, where the old family cellars are, and the wines are still matured in concrete tanks, as they were some 40 years ago. Eighteen of their hectares are Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages, and seven are in Fleurie. The fruit for this wine comes from the Villages parcels, on granitic, sandy soils closer to those of Fleurie, and the vines there are around 40 to 50 years old, as they are in Fleurie.
Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau is the first taste of the new harvest, and this is a fruity young French red wine from a family we've now worked with for two Novembers running. Celebrate the new vintage with this delicious drop.
