Cortese, Nostru Organic Nerello Mascalese 2021

Get to know: Cortese, Nostru Organic Nerello Mascalese

Tasting Note

This lovely medium-bodied red wine is made from Mount Etna's premium red grape. Intense yet delicate with a fine silky texture with redcurrant, Morello cherry and blackcurrant notes. There's a fresh acidity that gives this energy and it ends with hints of dark chocolate and an earthy, mineral note.

Try with succulent burgers and grilled fish dishes or simply with pasta in a tomato sauce.

Kate Says

"Nerello Mascalese can produce wines that are similar to Pinot Noir and this great example offers a harmonious blend of ripe berries with subtle earthy undertones, reflecting the rich volcanic soils of Sicily. I'd enjoy this with a grilled tuna steak."

Producer Info

Cortese, produce wine in the most traditional and natural way to reflect the true character of the estate’s terroir and its grape varieties. Taking tradition as their inspiration, they employ ancient wine-making techniques such as fermentation in terracotta. The resulting wines reflect the combination of modern technology and traditional techniques, with every nuance of the terroir showing through.

The must is fermented on the skins with frequent remontage during the early stages of fermentation. Once fermentation is finished, they continue the skin contact for about 15 days with one very soft remontage a day. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally once separated from the skins. The wine is kept on its very fine lees for about 6-8 months before being bottled.
