A Roussillon red wine from Maury Sec - old Grenache and Carignan, at the foot of the last Cathar castle.
Dark fruit, and plenty of it, with a black-pepper bite that arrives early and stays. Deep in the glass. What keeps the whole thing moving is the acidity - juicy, insistent, cutting a line through fruit that would otherwise sit heavy - so it drinks with far more energy than the colour suggests. This is a classic Maury, and once you have had one you recognise the next one. Recommended if you want something you've not tried before.

Clos del Rey is a young estate, not an old dynasty. Jacques Montagné founded it in 2001; his son Julien, an oenologist, joined in 2007 and took over in 2010. Twelve hectares at the heart of 300 hectares of protected Natura 2000 garrigue, climbing to 300 metres - the highest in the Maury cru. The Tramontane wind blows through this valley about one day in three, dry and cold, funnelled between the Pyrenees and the Massif Central. It isn't a romantic detail - it dries the vineyard out and keeps disease pressure down, and it's a large part of why Julien can farm the way he does here at all.
Maury made its name on fortified wine, and the dry red appellation, Maury Sec, was only created in November 2011.
Maury Sec is one of the newest red appellations in France and still largely unknown here, which is exactly why this Roussillon red wine is such good value. Dark, peppery and alive, from a grower doing it properly.
