Get to know: Chateau Climens, Cypres de Climens 2016 (37.5cl)
Tasting Note
Climens is one of the top wineries of Barsac, which, along with the famed Sauternes, are the best-known sweet wine appellations in Bordeaux. This is a luscious sweet wine with an explosion of ripe pear, candied apricot, grapefruit, and orange rind flavours along with hints of nutmeg, honey, caramel, and minerals. The sweetness is not at all cloying, thanks to a balancing acidity.
Try this with goats cheese.
Kate Says
"I love dessert wines. The intensity of flavour is amazing, and they can be such a treat. This is a superb example and would be brilliant with an apple and apricot tart."
Producer Info
Château Climens, owned by the Lurton family since 1971, is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest fortified wines. Its vineyard stretches over 30 hectares of Sémillon and the vines have an average age of 35 years. Cyprès de Climes is the second wine of this iconic château of the vineyard of Barsac. Although it is not produced every year, it is very popular as more accessible than its older brother.
This wine is made from grapes that have been affected by a fungus called botrytis. This causes the grapes to shrivel and concentrates their sugars resulting in lusciously sweet wines with great complexity and ageing potential.
