Champagne Delavenne, Ame de Vitalie Grand Cru NV

Get to know: Champagne Delavenne, Âme de Vitalie Grand Cru NV

Grand Cru Champagne from Bouzy - Pinot Noir and Chardonnay blended from a solera of eleven vintages.

Tasting Note

Pale gold in the glass, with fine bubbles. Citrus peel and white flowers lift out first, followed by toasted brioche and a chalky mineral edge. On the palate it's creamy and bright at once, with baked apple, lemon curd and a little spice. The finish is long and fine. Absolutely superb stuff.

Top food pairings:

  • Gougères or fresh oysters
  • Roast chicken with lemon and herbs
  • Salted almonds and good green olives
Kate Says

"A solera means the wine gets topped up from earlier years, so each bottle holds layers from several vintages at once. This one pulls together eleven of them, from 2004 to 2014, which is a lot going on in one glass. Look at the bubbles when you pour, then take your time over the first sip."

Producer Info

Champagne Delavenne is a family estate in Bouzy, one of the Grand Cru villages of the Montagne de Reims, now in the hands of the fourth generation. As a Récoltant-Manipulant they make Champagne from their own grapes. The family has stopped using herbicides in the vineyards and works with indigenous yeasts.

How it's made:

  • Blended from a solera of 11 vintages, 2004 to 2014
  • Hand-harvested grapes pressed parcel by parcel in the family press
  • Fermented with indigenous yeasts, with no malolactic fermentation to keep the freshness
  • Aged on the lees for at least five years, in chalk cellars

Good to know:

  • Region: Bouzy, Montagne de Reims, Champagne, France
  • Grape: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay
  • Style: Sparkling white, Brut, Grand Cru
  • Closure: Cork
  • Vegan: Yes
  • ABV: 12.5%
  • Vintage: NV (solera of 11 vintages, 2004 to 2014)

Why we love it:

A layered Grand Cru Champagne with real depth, made from eleven vintages blended through a solera. A bottle for a celebration, or for turning an ordinary Saturday into one.
