Get to know: Cassagne et Vitailles, Montpeyroux 'Les Chausmes' 2023
A Languedoc red from Montpeyroux, made from Syrah, Grenache and Carignan grown on clay-limestone at the foot of Mont Saint Baudile.
Tasting Note
Black berries and spice lead, with dried herbs and a little smoke behind them. Cool nights on the hillside keep it fresh, so it never feels heavy. The tannins are fine and take their time to open up, so give it an hour in a decanter. The finish is fruity and lingers.
Top food pairings:
- Roast lamb with thyme and garlic
- Ratatouille with crusty bread
- Hard sheep's milk cheese
- Vegan: mushroom and lentil pie
Kate Says
"This is a fine Languedoc red with a freshness that's unusual for the area. Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, grown on poor limestone where the nights stay cool. Open it a little ahead of dinner and let it loosen up."
Producer Info
Cassagne et Vitailles started in 2015, when two friends, Nicolas Seffusatti and Matthieu Rollin, decided to start their own estate on the Terrasses du Larzac. Both had spent years importing and selling wine, including in China. They farm about 7.85 hectares around Montpeyroux, mostly Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Cournoise, and make roughly 19,000 bottles a year. They say they have farmed organically with biodynamic practices since the start.
How it's made:
- Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, with the proportions not supplied
- Grown on clay-limestone soil at the foot of Mont Saint Baudile, where cool nights keep the grapes fresh
- The producer has described ageing it for around 12 months in new Chassin barrels and wine-barrels. Not confirmed for the 2023
- Made in a gravity-fed winery, with no pumping
