Andreas Syrah 2021

Get to know: Andreas Syrah

A rich, full-bodied Syrah from the historic Andreas Wine Estate.

Tasting Note

Andreas Syrah is their flagship wine. It is immediately inviting with a bright, deep red colour with pinkish edges. Fresh, vibrant nose of forest fruits, with touches of spice and caramel and notes of hazelnut and dry prunes. Touch of vanilla flavours, indicating good usage of oak. Delicate palate with expression of ripe sweet red fruits, sour cherries, raspberries and notes of spice and pepper and fine tannins that offer structure. Fruity, round, complex and full finish. Ageing potential of three to five years, but ready to drink as it is already full, dry and complex, with fruity richness.

Top food pairings:

  • Slow-roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic
  • Sirloin steak.
  • Grilled smoky sausages with spicy relish
  • Aged hard cheeses like Manchego or Pecorino
Kate Says

"This is an outstanding wine from a tiny estate. It's really gorgeous rich and powerful but not overblown - just well made and gets better with every new vintage. One to have with something special."

Producer Info

Andreas Wine Estate, located in the Bovlei Valley near Wellington, is steeped in history, dating back over 300,000 years and one of the earliest Huguenot settlements. The estate’s 4.5 hectares of vineyards thrive on decomposed granite and shale soils under a climate of hot summers cooled by afternoon breezes and chilly winters. Since 2015, a UK-based group of wine enthusiasts has worked to elevate Andreas’s reputation, guided by winemaker Shaun Meyeridricks, who brings experience from Boekenhoutskloof.

How it’s made:

  • Hand-picked grapes harvested early mornings, brought to the cellar cool and fresh
  • Fermented and nurtured under skilled supervision
  • Aged 12–18 months in French oak barrels
  • Further matured for 24 months in bottle before release
  • Boutique production allowing close quality control at every step

Good to know:

  • Region: Bovlei Valley, Wellington, South Africa
  • Grape: Syrah
  • Vintage: 2021
  • ABV: 14.5%

Why we love it:

Andreas Syrah is a refined and layered wine that captures the unique history and terroir of its estate. With its vibrant fruit and spice character, balanced by firm tannins and acidity, it’s a superb choice for fans of classic, age-worthy Syrah with a South African twist.
