Get to know: Virgen de Lorea OTX Txakoli
A vibrant Basque white wine from the cool, green hills of the Basque Country in northern Spain.
Tasting Note
Virgen de Lorea OTX Txakoli is a fresh, zippy style of Txakoli wine that’s all about energy and drinkability. Pale lemon in colour with a faint natural spritz, it opens with lifted aromas of green apple, ripe citrus, lime zest, and a subtle saline note that hints at its Atlantic influence. On the palate, the zesty quality of native grape Hondarribi Zuri really shines, delivering crisp acidity, crunchy orchard fruit, and a gently textural feel from a short period on lees. It finishes bone-dry, refreshing, and mouthwatering – a classic Basque white wine that’s dangerously easy to drink.
Top food pairings:
- Grilled sardines or anchovies with lemon
- Salt cod fritters or seafood croquettes
- Fresh oysters or mussels steamed with herbs
Kate Says
"Txakoli is a uniquely refreshing style – if you love Picpoul or dry Riesling, you'll find the same citrus and mineral energy here. Bracing, citrusy and made for seafood – it tastes like the Basque coast in a glass."
Producer Info
Bodegas Virgen de Lorea is one of the pioneering producers of Bizkaiko Txakolina, officially established in 1995 but rooted in a family farming history stretching back over 300 years. Based on the southern slopes of the Otxaran-Zalla mountains in Las Encartaciones, the winery benefits from calcareous-clay soils, Atlantic rainfall, cool temperatures, and refreshing northern winds – ideal conditions for producing vibrant, high-acid Txakoli wines with purity and finesse.
How it’s made:
- Varieties: Hondarribi Zuri and Hondarribi Zuri Zerratia
- Harvested once sugars and acidity are perfectly balanced
- Destemming followed by cold maceration to enhance aromatics
- Temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve freshness
- A short period on fine lees to add subtle texture before bottling
