Paul Wallace Elgin Chardonnay "Reflections" 2023

Get to know: Paul Wallace Reflection Chardonnay 2023

A refined and expressive South African Chardonnay from the cool-climate vineyards of Elgin.

Tasting Note

Paul Wallace Reflection Chardonnay 2023 is an elegant, barrel-fermented white that balances bright citrus fruit with subtle oak richness. Pale gold in colour, it opens with aromas of lemon, lime, green apple, and a touch of brioche. On the palate, this Elgin Chardonnay shows impressive breadth and precision, with vibrant citrus and orchard fruit flavours layered alongside a delicate oak sweetness and underlying minerality. The texture is creamy yet fresh, thanks to partial malolactic fermentation, leading to a long, clean finish that keeps you coming back for another sip. A beautifully poised oaked Chardonnay that showcases both purity and complexity.

Top food pairings:

  • Fresh oysters or grilled seafood
  • Roast chicken with lemon and thyme
  • Creamy cheeses like Gorgonzola
Kate Says

"If you liked Iona Chardonnay, this is a brilliant next step. It’s got that lovely zippy citrus core, but then layers in toasted pineapple and a bit of creaminess from the oak. Properly balanced and just keeps going on the finish."

Producer Info

Paul Wallace Wines is a boutique producer in Elgin, a region widely regarded for producing some of the finest cool-climate South African Chardonnay. With small-scale production and a focus on site expression, the Reflection Chardonnay comes from a single vineyard planted on Bokkeveld shale soils. The south-facing slopes and cooling influences of the nearby dam help retain freshness and build the vibrant acidity that defines Elgin wines, while careful oak use adds depth without overpowering the fruit.

How it’s made:

  • Varieties: 100% Chardonnay
  • Hand-harvested into small crates to preserve fruit quality
  • Whole-bunch pressed for purity and finesse
  • Fermented in Burgundian oak barrels with 33% new oak
  • Aged for 10 months in oak with partial malolactic fermentation for texture and balance

Good to know:

  • Region: Elgin, South Africa
  • Style: White, still, medium- to full-bodied, oaked
  • Closure: Cork
  • Vegan: No
  • ABV: 13%

Why we love it:

This South African Chardonnay from Elgin strikes a brilliant balance between zesty citrus freshness and subtle oak richness. With its layered complexity, creamy texture, and long finish, it’s a standout choice for lovers of modern, cool-climate Chardonnay.
