From the limestone hills of Leistadt in the Pfalz, a ripe and textured German white wine made entirely from Sauvignon Blanc.
Blackcurrant leaf and crushed gooseberry come first, then grapefruit and a green, grassy snap behind them. Pale and bright in the glass, with real weight on the palate: ripe orchard fruit, a light grip of texture across the tongue, and acidity that stays lively right through. A faint floral, almost almondy edge drifts in as it warms up. The finish turns salty and mineral, and it hangs around. A different take on Sauvignon Blanc with some flesh on it.
Top food pairings:
"We had this as bottle special in our bars and it was an immediate hit. Ripe, textured, expressive - its so easy to enjoy. Thankfully we've been able to get more of this vintage, so enjoy it while it lasts."
Hanewald-Schwerdt farm in Leistadt, up in the Pfalz, on hillsides sitting over a freshwater reef laid down millions of years ago. That limestone gives the Kalkriff range its name, and the point of the range is to show what the rock does to three grapes: Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Spätburgunder. Their best parcels sit in the Leistadter Kalkofen and Herrenmorgen, on a plateau looking down over the Kallstadter Saumagen.
A German white wine that takes its character straight off the rock it grows on: ripe fruit with a salty finish, and enough texture to sit happily next to dinner. Worth a detour if Sauvignon Blanc is already your thing.
