Syrah / Shiraz

What is Syrah?

Syrah (pronounced See-rah) is a bold and characterful red grape variety that makes rich, full-bodied wines. Known as Syrah wine in France and most of the Old World, and Shiraz wine in Australia and parts of the New World, this grape delivers powerful flavours and plenty of personality.

We've put together a simple guide to help you get to know this distinctive grape and choose the Syrah or Shiraz wine that’s right for you.

What does Syrah taste like?

Syrah wine is known for its deep colour, firm tannins and bold flavours. It's a wine that packs a punch, with typical tasting notes of:

Blackberries, Black Pepper, Liquorice, Smoked Meat, Dark Chocolate

In warmer climates, such as Australia, Shiraz wine tends to be fuller-bodied and fruitier, with sweeter spice notes. Cooler climate Syrah wines – such as those from the northern Rhône – are more savoury and structured, often with earthy or smoky undertones and a peppery finish.

Where does it come from?

Syrah has its roots in the Rhône Valley in southern France, where it makes some of the region's most prestigious wines. It’s also made with great success in Australia, where it's called Shiraz and has become the country's signature red grape. South Africa and California are also producing exciting examples of both styles.

France – Northern Rhône | Australia – Barossa Valley | South Africa – Western Cape | USA – California

Where should I start with Syrah/Shiraz?

If you’re new to the grape, a fruit-forward Australian Shiraz wine is a great starting point – juicy, generous and easy to enjoy. Want something more savoury and structured? Try a French Syrah wine from the Rhône Valley or Languedoc-Roussillon, perfect for pairing with roast lamb or chargrilled vegetables.
